Stay on Track

Gear up, sports fans, because the UK:Athletics' Kids:Zone, www.ukazone.net, is celebrating serious sporting activity. Browse through the homepage to see what's new in sports news and to find out about people who are making names for themselves. Give your fingers a workout in Games as you try the long jump or the 200-meter sprint. Before you move on, give your PC a sporty makeover in Downloads, where you can find just the right wallpaper, such as athletes in action or the Kids:Zone characters. Find Your Way

Get to know the true story behind mathematics at Math Maze, http://library.thinkquest.org/
05aug/01951. History buffs will appreciate the History of Math to learn how advanced civilizations in Egypt and Babylon used this science. You can put five faces with famous discoveries in Five Mathematicians, where the life stories of Pascal, Fibonacci and others are detailed. Put your knowledge to the test in Application of Mathematics, so you can see just how amazing math in action really is.

Negotiate the Nile

Travel to Egypt and take a tour of this amazing country with your guide, Nakht-Amun, at The Nile File, www.diduknow.info/nilefile. As you both make your way through ancient Egypt, click on the highlighted words to discover more information. This useful glossary will certainly inform the curious. For example, did you know that 99 percent of ancient Egyptians could not read? Be sure to check out At School to see how Nakht-Amun learned his lessons. Then visit Something to Do, where several activities, including drawing and coloring, are waiting for you.

Dear Amy: What is the latest kind of robot? — Kavin, Trichy, India

Dear Kavin: Scientists create new robotic technology every day. Today, there are robots that can walk like humans, ones that play soccer, and there are even robots that “learn” in a way that is similar to how we learn. You can stay updated on the latest robotic developments with Science Daily’s Robot News at www.sciencedaily.com/news/computers_math/robotics.

Dear Amy: What Web site can we go to for extra practice questions in math and science? — Lakshmi, Ernakulam, India

Dear Lakshmi: Most of us need a little extra practice from time to time. Luckily, the Internet makes it really easy to get extra practice or even to get homework help. A good place to start is www.internet4classrooms.com/
grade_level_help.htm, where you can find practice in math, language arts, science and social studies for kindergarten through eighth grade. Another great way to get extra practice is by playing educational games online. My favorite places to go are www.funbrain.com/kidscenter.html and 4kids.org/games. Have fun!
