H20 Rules!

One of my favorite ways to spend a summer afternoon is swimming at the beach or the pool. I always remember to wear sunscreen, but sometimes it's a little bit harder to remember all of the water safety rules. Some rules, such as no running at the pool, are easy to remember. Others are a little less obvious. Did you know that it's a bad idea to chew gum or eat while swimming? You could choke, so keep your treats on land.

Accidents can happen, so you should always swim in areas where a lifeguard is present. If you're swimming in a backyard pool at home, make sure a parent or other adult is around to keep you safe. Even if you're a good swimmer, it never hurts to have an adult on the lookout.

Before you jump in, test the water temperature. Swimming in water that's too cold can slow your muscles down and make it harder to swim. Be sure to grab a buddy, too. Swimming with a friend can help you keep safe. Plus, it's more fun to swim when you aren’t swimming alone. For more water safety tips, visit http://kidshealth.org/kid/watch/out/water.html.
