Dear Amy: I am having trouble finding a good index of WWW sites. What are
your favorite indices and where can I find them? Bill, San Diego, CA
Dear Bill: There are several excellent indices of WWW sites. My favorites are
Yahoo at http:// www.yahoo.com/ and The
WWW Virtual Library at http://www.w3.org/pub/DataSources/bySubject/Overview.html.
(The Virtual Library is now located at http://vlib.org/Overview.html.)
These indices contain thousands of listings of Web sites from around the world.
You might also like to use a search engine such as the Webcrawler to locate
topics like "dogs" or "bridges." A search engine allows the
user to type in the name of a topic and the computer searches the Internet for
information about your topic.
Dear Amy: It seems that it would be really great if my whole town were
connected to the Internet. I could find out the time of my next soccer game
or order lunch from my favorite restaurant. Do you think this will ever happen
in my lifetime? Sue, Sheridan, WY
Dear Sue: The whole town of Blacksburg, Virginia has connected to the Internet
just as you have suggested. You can see it at http://
www.bev.net/ but I don't think that the local restaurants will deliver
to you in Wyoming.
