World’s Greatest Horse?

SecretariatSecretariat, secretariat.com, is one of the best-known race-horses in history. He won the prestigious Triple Crown in 1973, and his win by 31 lengths in the Belmont Stakes has never been equaled. The Big Red Horse was even the subject of a 2010 Disney movie. Visit Spotlight to learn more about owner Penny Chenery, nicknamed the “First Lady of Racing.” Jockey Ron Turcotte, who rode Secretariat to Triple Crown victory, won more than 3,000 races in his career. Secretariat’s Legacy as the world’s greatest horse will forever be remembered by racing enthusiasts.

Triple Crown

The Kentucky Derby is the first of three events that make up the Triple Crown, horse racing’s greatest prize. The Derby is traditionally run on the first Saturday in May, followed by the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Only 11 horses in history have won all three races, earning the prestigious Triple Crown title. Churchill Downs, host of the Kentucky Derby, has a history filled with names you may recognize from school. The grandson of explorer William Clark was instrumental in establishing horse racing in Louisville. His research in Europe helped shape thoroughbred racing in America today.
