Dear M’kaylah: There are many types of doctors, including general practitioners, surgeons and specialists. Training for a career in medicine takes longer than for most jobs. You should study math, chemistry, physics and biology to prepare for the courses you’ll take in college. On average you will need four years of college, four years of medical school and three to eight years of residency in a hospital, depending on your specialty.
