All About Birds

whooping craneWatching birds is a fun hobby for all ages. Nebraska’s diverse avian population is featured at Project Beak, projectbeak.org. Check out Birding Basics, where you can be a casual birder and observe what you see and hear, or you can Gear Up with items such as binoculars, a notebook and a field guide. Attract birds to your backyard by adding feeders, nest boxes and a variety of plants. Birds and People have always interacted, but Fashion describes the downside of bird feathers as a popular ladies’ hat accessory years ago, causing severe declines in some bird populations.

Dear Amy: Can you help me find educational games for my 3-year-old granddaughter to play on my iPad? — Arianna, Boynton Beach, Fla.

Dear Arianna: There are so many to choose from! With new game apps being added to stores every day, it can be hard to tell which ones are the best. I always like to read reviews before downloading a game, especially if it’s a paid app. A wonderful place to find game reviews for kids is Best Kids Apps, bestkidsapps.com. This site offers reviews for iPhone, iPad and Android apps that are made especially for kids. You can sort the reviews by age group or device type. You can also choose between different categories, such as “Free” or “Educational.”

Another great site for reviews is Teachers With Apps, teacherswithapps.com. All the apps here are educational and are tested by teachers and students as part of the review process. Go to Categories to choose a specific age range, such as Babies/Toddlers.

Many websites for parents will occasionally review apps, too. Check out Parenting’s Best iPhone and iPad Games for Little Kids at parenting.com/gallery/eduational-iphone-apps.
