Dear Amy: Do I need to use antivirus software on my smartphone? — Kelly, St. Paul, Minn.

Dear Kelly: Today’s smartphones allow you to use the Internet on the go, but they’re not without risk. Just as you should use safe surfing habits and have antivirus software on your home computer, it’s a good idea to do the same with your smartphone. There are many antivirus apps available for Android, iPhone and Windows phones, including free options. Some even include anti-theft features that will allow you to locate your phone using GPS, set a password lock or erase personal data in case your phone is stolen or missing.

Many phone viruses, as well as malware, are transferred through infected apps. It’s always a good idea to research an app to make sure it’s safe before downloading. Read reviews online and ask your parents for help before downloading any app if you are unsure.

To learn more about keeping your smartphone safe and how to choose antivirus software, visit electronics.howstuffworks.com/cell-phone-apps/best-mobile-anti-virus-app.htm. A little bit of prevention can go a long way in keeping your phone virus-free!
