Hero Skills

Would you know what to do in case of an emergency? Most kids know to call 911, but there are other ways you can help, too. Learning basic first-aid skills can help you save someone's life. For example, if someone is having trouble breathing, knowing how to clear his or her airway can help keep the person alive until paramedics arrive. You never know when an accident might happen, so it's a great idea to take a first-aid class to learn what to do or not do in an emergency. Check with a local hospital or community center to find classes in your area.

Having a good first-aid kit is important too. Talk to your parents about where your first-aid kit is located. You can make or buy a kit if you don’t already have one. For a list of items to put in your kit, visit http://kidshealth.org/
. Once you have your kit ready, go over the first-aid manual with your parents and check out http://kidshealth.org/parent/firstaid_safe. Click on Emergencies: What to Do for instructions for different situations, from bug bites to broken bones.
