Dear Amy: Should I use my real name online?— Nicole, Brandon, Fla
Dear Nicole: This is a very good question. It is important to take safety precautions when you are surfing the Web. You should not give out personal information over the Internet. You should never give out your last name, address, phone number, or where you go to school. It is OK to use your first name. You can also make up a name just to use when you are on the computer. This can be fun for you and your friends.
There are many situations you will be faced with on the Web, and you should be ready for them. For example, people in a chat room may ask where you live, or when you are instant messaging, someone may ask your full name. Never give out this type of information. Even kids’ sites may encourage you to become a member and ask for personal information. You should always ask a parent or guardian if it is OK to provide your last name or address.
