Dear Riley: The difference between freezing rain and sleet is the form of precipitation in which they hit the ground. If the ground is below 32 degrees, water's freezing point, and the air is above 32 degrees, precipitation will not freeze until it hits the ground. This is freezing rain. If the air near the ground is below freezing, precipitation will freeze into tiny ice pieces before hitting the ground. This is sleet. Dear Amy: What causes an electromagnetic field? -- Ellen, London

Dear Ellen: An electromagnetic field forms as negatively charged electrons flow through a wire. The field strengthens when the wire is wrapped around a metal object such as a screw. The experiment found at www.magnet.fsu.edu/education/students/activities/makeanelectromagnet.html demonstrates how you can make an electromagnet. If you hold an electromagnet next to a compass, you can observe the movement of the compass needle as it passes in and out of the electromagnetic field.
