African Safari

Grab your safari hat and explore the biodiversity of central Africa at the World Wildlife Field Expeditions at www.worldwildlife.org/expeditions/car/index.html. The expedition is essentially a biological inventory of the Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve in the center of Africa. This reserve includes Africa's largest elephant population, 16 primate species and thousands of plants. The site has cool maps, fact sheets and an Ask the Scientists feature. Dear Amy: How do digital cameras take pictures? -- Jeff, Valley City, N.D.

Dear Jeff: Digital cameras take pictures by capturing light in small cells called photosites. Photosites convert photons, or light energy, into electrons, or electrical energy. Photosites do not distinguish between colors, so a filter must be used to separate the light into its three primary colors: blue, red and green. Each photosite is designated a color to capture. An analog-to-digital converter changes the electrical charges into digital data. Then the data is stored at a reduced resolution.
