Constitution Day

September 17 is Constitution Day. Celebrating the signing of the Constitution in 1787 reminds us to appreciate the freedoms that we enjoy in the United States of America.

Thirty-nine men signed the document that has governed the United States for over 200 years. Before the writing of the Constitution, our country was organized under the Articles of Confederation. However, as the outline at http://odur.let.rug.nl/~usa/H/ 1994/ch4_p2.htm shows, the Articles didn't provide the government with the authority needed to rule the country.

George Washington and other American leaders decided to redefine the laws. In May of 1787, delegates from across the nation gathered in Philadelphia to debate the issues that were important to their states. After months of hard work, the Constitution was born.

Since 1787, 27 amendments have been added to the Constitution, adding to the freedoms that make America unique among all nations. This month, let's remember the liberties that we enjoy in America and appreciate those who established them for us.
